On this composition
A folk tale, retold for your wall.
A long carved boat glides across a lotus lake at night, its coral canopy sheltering a whole party: musicians with lutes and drums, guests sharing a low table of fruit, friends deep in conversation. Swans drift past, lotuses open on the dark water, and two ladies watch from the shore.
Along the far bank, palaces with little domes and rows of cypress trees line the horizon. It is drawn in the Phad way - bold outlines, flat colour, a crowd of figures telling one story - in coral, celadon, ivory and pale gold on a deep indigo ground, inside a blue-and-ivory floral border.
A wide, lively piece for above a sofa, a dining table or a long cafe wall - the kind of party everyone wishes they had been invited to.
