Ring phenko, inaam pao - throw the ring, win the prize. A group of women in red and blue lehengas take their shots at a mela stall, rings flying through the air, one of them crouched at the front cheering. Behind the counter a moustached stallholder in a patterned turban hands out more rings while his partner points at the next prize: stacks of bright soap boxes, a row of wristwatches and a gleaming steel tiffin.

The stall sits inside a scalloped arch on a cream ground, framed by a wide cobalt-blue border of white flowers, curling vines and long-tailed birds, all drawn in a fine dark line. A cream-and-blue flower border runs round the outside, finished with a flat deep-blue edge.

For anyone who still remembers aiming for the watch and winning the soap - a square piece for a cafe wall, a living room, a study or a gallery wall.
