On this composition
A folk tale, retold for your wall.
Before notebooks there was the slate. Four little ones sit cross-legged on a striped red and blue mat, heads down, scratching letters and numbers onto wooden-framed slates, spare chalk sticks lying beside them on the weave.
Their teacher, spectacles on his nose and a neat moustache, stands over them in a white dhoti and shawl, one hand held out to check the work, while a framed parrot on a branch watches from the wall. Drawn in the fine outlined manner of a Kalamkari cloth in madder red, indigo, sage and cream, inside a red border of open flowers and leaves.
A gentle, nostalgic piece for a study, a reading corner, a kids' room or a teacher's home.
