Say cheese - or don't. At the mela photo studio, a family lines up in front of a painted plywood aeroplane covered in flowers and birds, a round porthole framing each grown-up's face. Nobody smiles: the older brother in jeans and a printed tee, a little boy in a red hoodie, a girl in a cap and matching floral co-ord, and their sister in a denim jacket, cargo pants and a tote bag. Above them hangs a Hindi sign: Photo Studio.

The plane flies through an indigo night of stars with a full moon in the corner. It is all drawn the Kalamkari way - fine black line, floral prints, red, sage, mustard and indigo on warm cream - with rows of birds, flowers and little lamps above and below, inside a red-and-blue flower vine border and a flat brick-red edge.

For every family album that has that one mela photo in it - a portrait piece for a cafe wall, a living room, a study or a gallery wall.
